Yesterday May 5th, decided to visit the exhibit of the iconic perfume Chanel #5 at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, just before leaving for Milan for a long time.
I have been a fan of Chanel for a long time not only the brand but “Gabrielle” Chanel, the visionary woman who transformed her life from very humble beginnings to a the most powerful woman in fashion, I am not sure there will be another woman as emblematic as her, at least in the next years.
“Coco” as she was called, was a real visionary, ahead of her times, visionary and “gutsy”. Her unique personality and appearance attracted to her powerful men, that have been key on the development of her career. The one that is the most important as he not only sponsored her first boutique but influenced her way of thinking and philosophy is the English man Boy Capel, who enriched Chanel’s world with literature, art, esotresim but most importantly true love. As their story was romantic it ended tragically with the accidental death of Boy who died while he was driving to see Chanel after being apart such a long time by his marriage that he decided to end just before this tragic moment.
I come to this as according to the exhibition “Chanel #5” was born out of the intuition and pain of Chanel, in a way it was an homage to boy an escape of grief by creating something extraordinaire. Chanel for almost a century.
From the design to the scent its power has transcended generations conquering both men and women.
Why number 5? Chanel after meeting with Boy became a firm believer of signs and numbers and adopted number 5 as her “lucky” number, her fashion shows where held the 5th of February and the 5Th of July, she had 5 lions at her house, her hand print and of course her amazing perfume.
If you are in Paris I really recommend you to stop by the exhibition it is free to start, you get a real human feel to Chanel’s life, the mixture of creativity, tragedy and success, but also you see how someone like Chanel was so influenced by her times and became a revolutionaire through her fashion, relations and vision. Hurry up it finishes June 5th!. Stay tuned my adventures in Milan start as now! J mixing both cities. I will miss you Paris, but I am excited in a big way!
